What Is an RFID Nail Tag?

An RFID Nail Tag is a rugged tag with a pointed nail stem that drives directly into wood, timber beams, concrete plugs or soft ground — creating a semi-permanent RFID marker without adhesive, straps or brackets.

The nail head sits flush to the surface or slightly proud, with the RFID inlay encapsulated in a weatherproof housing. A handheld or vehicle-mounted reader captures the tag ID within a typical range of 0.5–4 m depending on material and frequency.

Available in HF (13.56 MHz) for short-range precision and UHF (860–960 MHz) for extended-range field work. Wood-specific and concrete-specific nail profiles available.

Where RFID Nail Tags Are Used

Wherever a permanent, weatherproof RFID marker needs to go into a surface — from managed forestry to construction sites and beyond.

Forestry & Tree Management

Nail a unique RFID identifier into each tree at planting or first inspection and build a lifelong digital record covering species, growth measurements, treatment history and ownership. Handheld readers let arborists update records on-site — no pen, no paper, no transcription errors. The weatherproof housing survives decades of outdoor exposure and bark growth around the tag.

Construction & Civil Infrastructure

Embed nail tags into timber beams, precast concrete elements, sleepers or wooden hoarding posts to track manufacture, delivery, inspection and installation. Linking physical materials directly to digital building-information models gives contractors an auditable chain-of-custody from factory to final structure — critical for structural timber certification and infrastructure maintenance records.

More Applications

One versatile tag format, many sectors.

Utility Poles

Identify wooden electricity and telecoms poles in the field.

Archaeology

Tag site markers and recovered artefacts with a durable reference.

Fencing & Posts

Track fence post installation and inspection records.

Sports Timing

Nail tags used as course markers in orienteering and trail events.

Frequently Asked Questions

They are designed as semi-permanent fixtures. Removal is possible but will damage the surrounding material. Recessed head styles are available to reduce the risk of accidental removal.
HF tags require a clear read face; UHF tags can be read through thin bark at close range. For long-term forestry use, the nail drives into heartwood and the tag typically becomes partially embedded over time — read performance should be tested for each species and reader combination.
Stainless steel nails are recommended for permanent outdoor and marine environments. Carbon-steel nails are suitable for indoor and temporary use.
Yes. Concrete-specific profiles use a masonry plug insert: drill a pilot hole, insert the plug, then drive the nail tag. UHF versions are recommended for concrete applications as HF performance is affected by dense material.
Typically 0.5–2 m with a handheld UHF reader in open woodland. Range varies with canopy density, soil moisture and reader antenna orientation.
